Phishing Explained and Anti-Phishing Software to use in 2021

In this article, we will be talking about anti-phishing software. Phishing is a form of cybercrime that is getting popular within our enterprises and should be contained before its prevalence destroys us.

What is Phishing?

Phishing defines the act where intruders send false messages to targeted victims with the aim to misguide them into sharing private and sensitive information, such as credit card numbers and passwords. The messages sent are often so intelligent and subtle and appear legitimate to fool even the keenest eyes. Once you as a user falls victim to these traps, they are able to access your accounts, alter them, and compromise associated systems.

The most popular means these attacks are deployed on are through emails and websites. An email may be sent claiming it’s from your bank, and they need you to update your account information. Attackers may steal your cookies from a  legit website, say an e-commerce website, and advertise you a similar product to the one you are purchasing at a lower price. Once you click on the item, they re-direct you to another site where they collect your credit card details and passwords.

Phishing covers a whole variety of scope. Some hackers are just satisfied gathering your information to steal from you. However, others use you as a pawn to acquire log-in details into your organization to launch a bigger attack. At times, they send attachments along with their email messages. Once you download the file, a ransomware virus is launched onto your systems, and now you have to pay them to release your resources.

It only takes one successful phishing attempt to cripple your organization as a whole. Hackers prey on our ability to trust easily. They keep innovating newer and less conspicuous tricks that render all of us prone to being victimized. Simply holding seminars and advising your employees to shun clicking on questionable content will not protect you from phishing attacks. It would be best to have a more proof solution that would detect even that the normal eye would miss.

Anti-Phishing Software

There are several ways to protect yourself from phishing attacks. Among them are:

Changed Behavior – Employees in your organization ought to be sensitized against clicking on every link or downloading attachments from unknown sources and unsecured websites.

Use Spam Filters – When you mark an email as spam, it’s moved from your inbox folder into your spam folder. Future subsequent emails from the same user will be stored in that folder. It is possible to receive messages from the same sender in the future, which makes this method not the most accurate.

Use Anti-virus Software – Anti-virus software has unique signatures embedded during production that protect against phishing attacks. However, you should always ensure your software is always updated and equipped with the latest measures to curb newer tricks from hackers.

Use Anti-Phishing Software – None of the methods mentioned above can work effectively alone. They all need to be used in conjunction with anti-phishing software. AI integrated software is able to detect and block suspicious content from all over the organization- emails, websites, applications, workstations, and mobile devices. They provide better and more comprehensive coverage throughout the organization.

There are a lot of anti-phishing software vendors in the market today, each offering a better solution than the other.  The solutions can be installed in your systems as hardware or software. It is also possible to deploy them as SaaS on a cloud-based platform, which is by far the fastest method and the least rigorous method.
